Bariatric Procedures

Understanding Your Bariatric Options

Every health journey is personal. Explore two commonly performed bariatric procedures and learn how they differ, before discussing your individual needs with a medical specialist.

Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)

Gastric Sleeve is a bariatric surgical procedure in which a significant portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach.

The smaller stomach limits the amount of food it can comfortably hold. The procedure may also affect hormones involved in hunger and appetite.

Unlike gastric bypass, gastric sleeve does not reroute the small intestine.

As with any major surgery, there are potential risks, nutritional considerations, and long-term follow-up requirements. Your surgeon will explain these during your medical evaluation.

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass)

Gastric Bypass is a bariatric surgical procedure in which the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and connects it to a lower section of the small intestine.

This changes the pathway food follows through the digestive system. It reduces the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and changes how the body processes and absorbs certain nutrients.

Because the digestive pathway is altered, lifelong nutritional monitoring and vitamin supplementation are particularly important.

The procedure involves specific benefits, risks, and long-term considerations that should be discussed directly with your surgeon.

Which Procedure Is Right for You?

There is no single bariatric procedure that is right for everyone. The most appropriate option depends on your medical history, overall health, individual needs, and the assessment of a qualified bariatric surgeon.

During your initial virtual medical consultation, the surgeon can explain the procedures in greater detail, review your medical history, discuss potential risks and benefits, and determine the appropriate next steps.
